If you like your history in the form of fiction, then
this fills the bill.  Reminiscent of "84 Charing
Cross Road" by Helene Hanff, the story evolves
through a series of letters written right after
World War II in Britain.  The central plot involves a writer who
begins corresponding with the inhabitants of Guernsey, one of
the Channel Islands.
