The Widows of Eastwick by John Updike

FIC Updike

I am a huge Updike fan and am always pleasantly surprised by his ability to depict modern relationships and situations in highly original ways using language that is clear, crisp, and amazingly insightful. This story picks up on the adventures of Alexandra, Sukie, and Jane, the Witches of Eastwick, now mature women. It can be read independently from the first book and still be enjoyed.

I am so glad you said "mature women" with regard to the Eastwick widows! Most reviewers are less delicate and more dolorous in reference to the aging threesome of witches and even Updike seems to deliberately catalogue the signs of diminution and decay over-zealously. Hope is gradually sapped from the reader's expectations. Why not give some play to the wiser joys and savvy overview of 70-ish women? But all aside, Updike is still a novelist of incomparable skill and power. Just watch: his next book will burst with wit and laughter and hope. I hope he lives and writes forever.
